Thoughts about the Lenten season
Lent is a period of 40 days during which many Christians remember the events leading up to and including the death of Jesus Christ, whose life and teachings are the foundation of Christianity. The 40-day period is called Lent after an old English word meaning ‘lengthen’.
What is the purpose of Lent?
Lent is 40 days long as a reminder of Christ’s 40 days in the wilderness, and His defeat of temptation (Matthew 4). Here we are reminded that Jesus was also tempted and that He stood firm against Satan’s temptations
What are the 3 things we do during Lent?
What are the three pillars of Lent? To help keep us on track, the church offers us three pillars to focus our efforts during the 40 days of Lent:
1). prayer
2). fasting
3). almsgiving.
The Lenten season is inspired by the 40 days Jesus spent in the desert preparing for his own sacrifice. In that same spirit of sacrifice and reflection, many people will give up something they love like chocolate, alcohol or another favorite food and many also abstain from eating meat other than fish and vegetables.
That’s what it was all about!
