After Portugal’s heartbreaking loss to Morocco in the 2022 World Cup, it felt like Ronaldo’s days with the national team were numbered. And when he left Manchester United for Saudi Arabia, I genuinely thought we might never see him regularly wear the Portugal jersey again.
But every international break — whether it’s a friendly or a major tournament — Roberto Martínez has never looked beyond Ronaldo.
Even when CR7 hit a rough patch, Martínez stood firmly by his side, trusting him, backing him, and naming him in the starting XI — over and over again.
Beating Denmark’s pace, making history by defeating Germany on their own turf in front of a roaring home crowd, and looking Spain straight in the eye to break down their tiki-taka — none of that came easy.
