Distractions!

Thoughts about distraction…

“When we clutter our lives with imagined obligations, unnecessary activities, and distractions that only kill time, we dilute the power of our lives.” Anne Katherine

My further reading led me to learn that …

“Distraction is a phenomenon in which a person tends to lose focus and gets deviated from the goal or objective.

Distractions can be of various types and because of multiple reasons. People sometimes get distracted because of monotonous work or because they have a short attention span.

Distraction can be caused because of internal or external factors. Some of the internal factors which cause distraction are tiredness, fatigue, hunger, physical pain, pressure and overthinking. External factors like social media, television and music can also cause distraction. There can be positive distractions, such as our loved ones if we are having a tough time, they can distract us from our problems at hand. The greatest distraction of the 21st century is the smart phone, it is all too easy to while away hours just scrolling your screen! Distractions also have a medical purpose. People who have panic attacks use different distraction techniques to cope with the situation. With the help of this technique, one can redirect their mind and slowly come out of the panic situation. Distractions have been used for centuries in different plays. One fine example of it is how William Shakespeare uses comic relief as a mode of distraction in a tragedy like Hamlet just to lighten the mood.”

And these thoughts ..

No matter what you’re working to accomplish, you will not get there in a straight line. The phone will ring, people will step into your office, your child will get get sick, bad weather will cause delays, your computer will crash, something new will interest you — you’ll repeatedly get knocked off course.

Don’t despair. It happens to everyone, all the time. The key to successful achievement is to get quickly back on track. The faster your recovery time, the more progress you’ll make.

Accept the fact that you’ll get knocked off course on a regular basis. Accept it, and don’t waste time or energy complaining about it or feeling sorry for yourself. That just compounds the problem.

Instead, move on past the distraction and re-focus your efforts on your original goal. It is often impossible to prevent distractions, yet you can always prevent them from lingering too long. Move past them as soon as you can, forget about them and get yourself back on course.
